Interviewer Best Practices ☏

As an Interviewer, it is crucial to always be best prepared, as you are someone who is representing the company’s brand. as well as playing an integral role in the candidates interview experience. It is super important to follow a few best practices when it comes to interviewing, but also don’t forget to have fun with it!

First Things First ☜

  • Understand the role you are hiring for and what your interview will be focussing on

  • Read the candidates resume/ look at their LinkedIn profile

  • Come prepared with questions

  • Bring a notebook/laptop to take notes during the interview

  • Take time to prep before the interview and after the interview

  • Need to reschedule your interview? Make sure you do as soon as possible! Don’t leave the candidate hanging or create more work for your hiring team/ recruiter to pick up your slack

  • Always have a positive attitude when it comes to interviewing! Understand that in order to grow your team and company, you need to hire great talent and really invest your time and resources to interviewing

  • Don’t forget, that how you treat people during and after the interview also is super important. Just because someone might not have been a fit, does not mean that they should not be treated equally as someone who you want to hire/will hire

  • We are all human, treat everyone with R.E.S.P.E.C.T

MAJOR No No’s ☓

  • Talking to the candidate/ asking about their sexual orientation, race, age, disability, religion

  • Sharing feedback with the next person who is interviewing the candidate- this will create bias

  • Making an initial snap judgment on the person you are interviewing

  • Asking way too many personal questions

Interviewing Etiquette ✓

  • Don’t be tardy to the party

  • Submit your feedback ASAP- the fresher it is in your mind the better the submitted feedback will be

  • Make the person feel comfortable! Folks can be nervous and overwhelmed while interviewing, please be mindful and respectful of that

  • Emergency? Inform the candidate/recruiter/recruiting coordinator so it can be handled appropriately and the candidate is not left in the dark

  • Leave room for candidates to ask you questions. Remember, they are interviewing you just as a much as you are interviewing them
